Rotolight Anova PRO is continuous LED light of choice for award-winning DoP

roy_wagner-2Award-winning director of photography Roy H Wagner ASC has chosen the Rotolight Anova PRO bi-colour continuous LED studio light as the exclusive light source for his new film, Trouble Sleeping.

Best known for his work on Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning TV shows such as Ray Donovan and House, long-running CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and the Sherlock Holmes reboot Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, Wagner has an extensive career in the film industry going back almost 50 years.

Having used all kinds of lights in his career, from tungsten and fluorescents to LEDs, Wagner has long been an advocate of the natural light and flexible qualities of Rotolight. Now he has shot an entire feature, Trouble Sleeping, with director Robert Adetuyi, using the Rotolight Anova PRO light as the sole source.

Designed by leading British LED manufacturer Rotolight, the Anova PRO delivers versatility, superior colour rendering and soft light output, making it ideal for cinematographers, videographers and photographers. With a powerful output of up to 7,200 lux at three feet, the studio and location LED is still able to deliver flattering, soft light output.

“I have often spoken of simplicity in image creation, and had wanted to do a feature with just one light and one lens,” says Wagner. “Of course this seldom happens, but I was given the chance to do it on Trouble Sleeping. “I chose the Rotolight system because I knew it could accurately reproduce the colour and power I needed. We did not use any fill, and used the Rotolight as a very articulated light source.”

The Anova PRO also features five patented, industry-first features designed to save time and money, and enhance creativity for users. One feature — CineSFX™ — is particularly relevant for users like Wagner as it provides a suite of customisable cinematic lighting effects, such as fire, lightning, sirens and gunshots, eliminating the need for timely and expensive traditional flicker box workflows. The Anova PRO is also 300% more power efficient than its LED competitors, enabling much greater run time and therefore more flexibility when running on battery on location.

Wagner made the point that; the unique light quality of the Rotolight Anova has eliminated problems many typically associated with LED lighting. “Rotolight has found a way of filtering that notch of blue wavelength that is harsh on actors’ eyes. On Trouble Sleeping, every actor took the time to ask about the light, and responded to the gentle quality.”

Alongside the creative control it gave him, he also praised the light’s practical aspects. “It survives the rough handling of everyday production, and crews who have very little time to ‘baby’ any equipment. Crews are pleased with how easily mounted and controlled the units are – they can be operated from the back of the light or from my iPhone. And producers are very happy with the reduced cost of the lighting package.”

“Would I recommend the Rotolight system to other cinematographers?” says Wagner. “The images I have been able to create are my answer. I’m extremely happy with the product and its ability to deliver the ideas that I pre-visualise.”

Introducing White Honeycomb Grid Inserts for the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid System

White Grid Inserts + BezelExpoImaging has today announced availability of a new White Grid Insert accessory for the Rogue Flash Grid.

Honeycomb grids attach to a flashgun, helping to create mood or drama in portrait photography. They are typically used to modify hair light, rim light, background light, or the main light to focus attention on the subject.

The White Grid Inserts were designed to scatter light from the product’s honeycomb grid cells. When directed towards a flat surface, they produce a light pattern distinctly different from traditional black grids, creating a centre spot surrounded by a glowing halo-like effect.

“Portrait photographers looking for a more gradual transition from light to shadow with their grids will be thrilled with our new White Grid Inserts for the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid,” says Erik Sowder, ExpoImaging CEO. “When used in portrait photography, the edge of the lighting pattern produced by the white grids appears much softer and gentler, compared to the rapid fall-off and more dramatic lighting effect produced by black grids. This provides an advantage for creating smoother background lighting when shooting elegant or feminine styled portraits.”

“The White Grid Inserts will not change the colour of the flash. Our experience of manufacturing the ExpoDisc White Balance Filter helped us in our search to identify the best material to use in making the white grids. The result is consistent colour from the centre grid spot to the outer edge of the light pattern,” Erik continues.

As an accessory attachment for the popular Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid for speedlights, which offers photographers the versatility to choose between a 16º, 25º and 45º spot of light, the new White Grid Inserts give photographers even more choices to help them create the style of lighting and mood they envision for their subject’s image.

To use the new White Grid Inserts, photographers need the attachment Grid Strap included with the Rogue 3-in-1 Flash Grid (sold separately). The White Grid Inserts cannot be attached to the flash without the Grid Strap.

The White Grid Inserts are priced at £17.95 incl. VAT (RRP).

The ColorEdge CS240 offers advanced features not usually available with cost-performance monitors such as a wide colour gamut, brightness uniformity and hardware calibration.

The ColorEdge CS240 has an impressively wide-gamut IPS (in-plane switching) with a 1920 x 1200 resolution display and reproduces 99% of the Adobe RGB colour space. The innovative LED backlight reduces power consumption to just 27 watts during typical operation and the flicker-free on-screen image display helps prevent eye fatigue.

RAL reveals why after almost nine decades they remain one of the world’s leading colour standards professionals

ral_gbRAL, the global market leader for colour standards, has today revealed why after almost 9 decades, they remain current and innovative in the architecture and design industries, with international distribution in over 40 countries.

RAL produce a range of colour charts, swatches, cards, fans, books and software for the professional and accurate selection and verification of colour for paint, interiors and design projects.

“We have succeeded for such a long time, because we make life easier for customers working in a wide variety of industries,” says Markus Frentrop, Global Head of Sales & Marketing at RAL.

“Due to globalisation and the fact that companies outsource many stages of their production processes, they need to ensure that a product is made of the same colour, even when the product parts have come from different parts of the world.”

“RAL makes communication about colour, much easier and more convenient. Everybody speaks “the same language” in terms of colour. If a colour is clearly defined by certain values, there is no room for misunderstandings” Markus continued.

RAL started to clearly define colour tones in 1927 with the launch of the first RAL colour chart, which consisted of 40 colours. The chart assigned numbers and names to each colour, creating a universal language. Today there are a total of 2,328 RAL colours, with RAL being the most used colour standard in the world.

RAL have expanded their colour range overtime to ensure they remain current and innovative. The RAL CLASSIC range today comprises of 213 colours that are available in gloss and semi-matt.

The following key milestones have significantly supported the RAL brand:

  • The launch of the RAL DESIGN range in 1993 provided a comprehensive palette of 1625 new colours
  • The launch of the RAL EFFECT range in 2007 added a further 420 semi-matt and 70 metallic colours
  • The RAL PLASTIC ranges were introduced in 2010, with 100 plastic chips matched to the Classic range and 200 chips for the Design range.

Color Confidence is one of the major distributors of RAL in the UK.

“For decades, RAL have been helping their customers to perform better in business and is still doing so today,” says Simon Prais, Technical Director at Color Confidence. “The long-term established availability of the RAL colour ranges is a key driver for many industries. People like the security of knowing they can rely on RAL to consistently provide them with the same colour’s over decades.”

RAL BOOKS are now available to complement each of the colour ranges. They are ideal for colour consulting, where colours are paired with descriptive words that illustrate a range of moods and feelings through colour.
