Mastering the Creative Workflow

Masterclass

We recently held the Mastering the Creative Workflow masterclass at Pinewood Studios to offer professional and budding photographers and filmmakers the ultimate creative experience. The one day event was hosted by professional photographer and BenQ Ambassador, Adrian Weinbrecht, and professional filmmaker and X-Rite Coloratti, Ollie Kenchington.

The event was sponsored by Calumet and run in partnership with X-Rite, BenQ, Rogue Photographic Design and Rotolight. It gave visitors an insight into how creative professionals make use of colour management solutions and professional lighting tools for their everyday projects.

The workshop was delivered to a mixture of professionals, amateurs, hobbyists; some visitors were looking to advance their already extensive knowledge, whilst others sought to learn the basics of photography and filmmaking.

The day consisted of four sessions:

‘Small Kit Big Results’

Adrian showed that in a photoshoot, it’s not all about the size of your lights that matter, you also need to consider where you position them. Adrian demonstrated that moving a light just a few degrees or inches can make or break an image.

Workshop 1

‘Everything is Colour’

In this session, Adrian discussed the psychological impact colour has on an image; “you have to have 100% confidence in each colour, because in the commercial world, consistency is everything.” Adrian also mentioned the importance of using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo when shooting in order to create an optimal colour reference and white balance target.

Colour separates your subject from the background. Colour reinforces the message that you set by your light; your light reveals the form of the subject and sets the mood which is then reinforced by colour,” Adrian told the audience.

Workshop 2

‘Shooting and Lighting your Model’

This session covered how to set your key, backlight and eyesight, how to position your model and the camera techniques to use when shooting. In this insightful session, Ollie also covered framing choices and setting your exposure and custom white balancing.

Workshop 3

‘Grading and Matching Cameras in Resolve’

Ollie discussed primary adjustments, perfecting contrast, drawing in your audience and re-framing in post.

Workshop 4

watch_now

As both experts are brand ambassadors; Adrian an X-Rite Coloratti and brand ambassador for BenQ and Rotolight and Ollie an X-Rite Coloratti, both were able to highlight the key products to use for optimal results during the photographic and filmmaking process.

From his professional experience, Ollie drew on the importance of light placement and setting the background, stating “calibration and colour management starts before we hit record.”

During his sessions, Ollie also demonstrated how to use the Rotolight NEO to provide a backlight during shooting. He showed how to use the X-Rite colour management solutions to achieve perfect exposure and reduce the time spent editing in post-production.

Ollie told the crowd “We’re trying to create the illusion of depth, because the whole purpose is to create something that draws our audience in, and makes them feel like they’re participating in this narrative.”

All attendees received a £40 discount of all X-Rite, BenQ, Rotolight or Rogue Photographic Design products purchased on the day.

Rotolight launch AEOS LED light for portrait and location photographers

neo_r2_c1Award-winning British LED lighting manufacturer, Rotolight have announced the launch of AEOS – an industry-first LED light for portrait and location photographers.

AEOS is a bi-colour, LED light with a unique, ‘ultra-thin’ design. It is one of the most portable lights on the market, weighing under 1.5kg. AEOS is the first location LED light to include integrated aluminium handles instead of a yoke, giving users the freedom to ‘work the light’ at angles and positions not otherwise possible.

AEOS delivers a powerful light output of 5,750 lux at three feet, but is also one of the most energy efficient LEDs on the market, able to run for three hours at 100% power on a single 95W battery – more than twice as long as the industry standard.

It will include a professional level ball head, providing complete 360-degree rotation, and 200-degrees of tilt, when mounted to a light stand, making the light truly versatile. The ball head is made from high-quality, solid aluminium and can support the full weight of the AEOS with battery and barn doors mounted, at any angle.

“The one thing that we’ve always understood is that photographers all work with light in so many different ways,” says Rod Gammons, Chairman at Rotolight. “However, they’re often hindered by the size, weight or manoeuvrability of the light. We’ve developed the AEOS as a result of clear feedback from our customers that wanted something powerful, but highly portable.”

AEOS features dual controls for brightness, and fast, tuneable colour on location. AccuColour ™ LED technology delivers industry-leading skin tone rendering performance, eliminating the need for lengthy post-production colour corrections.

“The Rotolight AEOS really is the ultimate light for location and portrait photographers who want something powerful, yet portable and easy to carry, with a beautiful soft light output. AEOS will simply enable you to get shots no one else can,” says Jason Lanier, Sony Artisan of Imagery and award winning photographer.

AEOS is packed full of Rotolight’s signature industry-first, patented features, including:

  • High Speed Sync Flash (HSS) provides a powerful HSS flash with zero recycle time for traditional photographic workflows
  • True Aperture Dimming™ calculates and displays F-stop for a subject at a given distance, eliminating the need to meter
  • AccuColour™ LED phosphor technology ensures the AEOS delivers exceptional colour rendering (CRI:96+).

AEOS comes with a full set of coloured filters and two diffusion filters. There is also a full range of optional accessories available. Watch the AEOS video here.

The Rotolight AEOS is priced at £899 incl. VAT RRP and is available to pre-order now.

Rotolight Anova PRO is continuous LED light of choice for award-winning DoP

roy_wagner-2Award-winning director of photography Roy H Wagner ASC has chosen the Rotolight Anova PRO bi-colour continuous LED studio light as the exclusive light source for his new film, Trouble Sleeping.

Best known for his work on Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning TV shows such as Ray Donovan and House, long-running CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and the Sherlock Holmes reboot Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu, Wagner has an extensive career in the film industry going back almost 50 years.

Having used all kinds of lights in his career, from tungsten and fluorescents to LEDs, Wagner has long been an advocate of the natural light and flexible qualities of Rotolight. Now he has shot an entire feature, Trouble Sleeping, with director Robert Adetuyi, using the Rotolight Anova PRO light as the sole source.

Designed by leading British LED manufacturer Rotolight, the Anova PRO delivers versatility, superior colour rendering and soft light output, making it ideal for cinematographers, videographers and photographers. With a powerful output of up to 7,200 lux at three feet, the studio and location LED is still able to deliver flattering, soft light output.

“I have often spoken of simplicity in image creation, and had wanted to do a feature with just one light and one lens,” says Wagner. “Of course this seldom happens, but I was given the chance to do it on Trouble Sleeping. “I chose the Rotolight system because I knew it could accurately reproduce the colour and power I needed. We did not use any fill, and used the Rotolight as a very articulated light source.”

The Anova PRO also features five patented, industry-first features designed to save time and money, and enhance creativity for users. One feature — CineSFX™ — is particularly relevant for users like Wagner as it provides a suite of customisable cinematic lighting effects, such as fire, lightning, sirens and gunshots, eliminating the need for timely and expensive traditional flicker box workflows. The Anova PRO is also 300% more power efficient than its LED competitors, enabling much greater run time and therefore more flexibility when running on battery on location.

Wagner made the point that; the unique light quality of the Rotolight Anova has eliminated problems many typically associated with LED lighting. “Rotolight has found a way of filtering that notch of blue wavelength that is harsh on actors’ eyes. On Trouble Sleeping, every actor took the time to ask about the light, and responded to the gentle quality.”

Alongside the creative control it gave him, he also praised the light’s practical aspects. “It survives the rough handling of everyday production, and crews who have very little time to ‘baby’ any equipment. Crews are pleased with how easily mounted and controlled the units are – they can be operated from the back of the light or from my iPhone. And producers are very happy with the reduced cost of the lighting package.”

“Would I recommend the Rotolight system to other cinematographers?” says Wagner. “The images I have been able to create are my answer. I’m extremely happy with the product and its ability to deliver the ideas that I pre-visualise.”

Introducing Rotolight ANOVA PRO – the world’s first bi-colour continuous LED light with high-speed sync (HSS) flash

Anova2Award winning LED lighting manufacturer, Rotolight have announced the launch of ANOVA PRO™ – the ultimate LED studio and location light.

Anova PRO is 43% brighter than its predecessors and now features several unique, industry-first features which save significant time and money, while enabling greater creativity for users. This includes a powerful High Speed Sync Flash (HSS) for use in a traditional photographic workflow. Anova PRO is the first continuous bi-colour LED light on the market to offer this feature.

Anova PRO FRONTIn flash mode, Anova PRO is able to produce 150% of the maximum continuous light output at any colour temperature, with zero recycle time. This is a major advantage over traditional strobe systems, thereby bridging the gap between strobe and continuous lighting, delivering the benefits of both without the disadvantages of either.

This feature also enables users to accurately see the shadows and highlights of a subject or shot. This makes it ideal for photographers looking to replace legacy strobe systems, or those who shoot a combination of photo and video, who currently have to purchase two separate products.

Anova PRO has five patented, industry-first features:

  • High Speed Sync Flash (HSS) provides a powerful HSS flash with zero recycle time for traditional photographic workflows
  • True Aperture Dimming™, which calculates and displays the F-stop at a given distance. This feature eliminates the need for light meters, saves time and eliminates the guess work associated with manually working out ISO and F-stop settings
  • CineSFX™ provides a powerful collection of customisable cinematic lighting effects
  • FX Slave™ enables the CineSFX™ effects to be ‘slaved’ to up to 512 third party light sources in real time with zero latency to create powerful lighting effects for large scale productions
  • Designer Fade™ provides custom fade up/down production effects.

The Anova PRO has already won two major industry awards and is receiving favourable reviews from industry experts.

Anova Pro’s Bi-Colour LED system with AccuColour™ LED Phosphor technology delivers exceptional colour rendering (CRI:96+), and a powerful output whilst using 94% less energy than a standard tungsten bulb.

Anova Pro is available as a bi colour model for maximum versatility, or as a fixed colour Daylight (5600K) model for maximum output, dependant on your workflow.

The Rotolight Anova Pro™ is priced at £1,439.99 incl. VAT RRP.
